What is the Connecticut Emissions Program?

The Connecticut Vehicle Inspection Program was established in 1983 and tests nearly 1.3 million vehicles per year. Vehicles are tested every two years by a network of more than 200 privately owned automotive service facilities located throughout the state. The emissions test checks for levels of hazardous materials that escape from the engine of your vehicle with the goal of reducing harmful pollutants that are released into the environment.

How do I become a Certified Test Inspector (CTI)?

To become a Certified Test Inspector (CTI), you must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license. You can immediately start reviewing the training materials online, linked below; the computer-based training consists of videos and a PowerPoint curriculum that can be completed at your own pace, usually in as little as several days to a week. Upon completion of the training, when you feel ready to take your test, you can immediately call the Opus Help Desk at 877-469-2887 for access to the online CTI certification exam. Note: all current CTIs will need to recertify every two years.

Can I Work at Multiple Test Centers?

Certified Test Inspectors (CTI) are permitted to work at multiple test centers simultaneously. Your certification travels with you if you change test centers.

What will Opus expect of me?

As a Certified Test Inspector (CTI) in the Connecticut Vehicle Emissions Program, you are expected to provide a courteous and professional experience to all motorists. You must maintain the highest degree of integrity, be knowledgeable about the testing processes and procedures, and demonstrate a commitment to answering questions and delivering customer satisfaction. CTIs who fail to meet the contractual requirements will be subject to citations and potential fines, suspension, and/or expulsion.
