Information for Prospective Certified Emissions Repair Facilities and Technicians

What is a Certified Emissions Repair Technician? (CERT)
Certified Emissions Repair Technicians (CERTs) are highly qualified, professional automotive technicians who have successfully completed required training programs devoted specifically to the repair of emissions-related problems, either through ASE L1 certification or master-technician manufacturer credentials.
What is a Certified Emissions Repair Facility? (CERF)
The State of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) highly recommends that motorists have any emissions-related repairs performed at a Certified Emissions Repair Facility (CERF). These facilities employ a minimum number of certified, professional automotive technicians (CERTs) who have successfully completed required training programs devoted specifically to the repair of emissions problems. Most importantly, only repairs performed at a CERF are eligible to be applied towards a cost waiver.
How do I become a Certified Emissions Repair Technician (CERT)?
To enlist as a Certified Emissions Repair Technician (CERT) to repair emissions problems detected during a test, you will need to provide proof of either a current CERT number or show proof of ASE L1 training, or factory training documents showing you are qualified to properly repair the make of vehicles you are working on. To pursue ASE L1 training, visit the ASE website. Contact the CT Emissions Program at ctemissions@myctvip.com or 877-269-2884 to provide required credential documentation. Note: CERTs will need to recertify every three years to keep their certifications up to date.
